FU interviewed US DJ YRS Jerzy:

What made you want to be a DJ, why not a rapper or a producer? 

It was something I had a passion for. I was always interested into DJing because I knew that was going to be a real way that I could break into the industry. By me being a DJ I managed to get signed to SKE Records an independent record label that is based out in Philly.

Where did your name come from?

I am a DJ, the "YRS" stands for Young Riot Squad or it can also stand for Young Rich Successful and "Jerzy" is the name people gave me when I moved from New Jersey to North Carolina. I always thought it made sense to name myself that and now it is starting to become a household name. A lot of people like that I chose something unique.

What genre of music do you specialize in?  

Hip Hop and Rap. I don't really listen to anything else, I love Hip Hop and that will probably never change. I have a couple of songs from different genres that I listen to but Hip Hop will always be my main genre.

What inspires your work, are there any DJ’s who you look up to? 

I admire Funk Master Flex and DJ Drama they are basically the two DJs that made me want to do this. In a way they paved the way for a lot of up and coming DJs like myself, I have been listening to their work for a while. I know that I will be successful in this game one day it's just a matter of time and hard work.

You host mixtapes, how many have you done so far, can you tell us about your most recent one?

I hosted over 40 mixtapes from several different artists. The most recent mixtape I hosted was called "Audio Murder" which is doing numbers on the internet right now it is a four-track EP from my artist Chox-Mak. That mixtape has some dope music on it my favourite track on that mixtape is "1995" it is just a smooth chill record that reminds me of the 90's.

Why do you think mixtapes are so important for a DJ?

They help build a DJs name and an artist’s name at the same time. You have all the artists promoting the mixtape and with them doing that it also builds the DJs name as well. Mixtapes have definitely helped make my name big out in the streets and online as well. Mixtapes will always be a part of the game I don't see them going away any time soon.

You also manage new artist Chox Mak how did that come about? 

Me and Chox have been working for a while then one day we decided to really take this music thing to the next level. We both have an amazing work ethic so we always have projects either out or in the works. Everyone has to check out the last single we dropped called "NLA" which is doing numbers right now it was produced by Maybach Music Group's Yung Ced.

What’s next for you? 

Right now I’m just focused on building SKE records and taking my artist Chox-Mak to the mainstream world. I'm just continuing to stay on the grind and make my dreams come true. I am just staying focused and continuing to become something great. You will defiantly be seeing me a lot more in the next couple of months.

How long have you been singing for?
I started singing straight after I learnt to talk
How would you describe your sound/what genre of music do you do?
My sound is US RnB, this has always been my favourite genre of music since I was a small child
With song writing, what inspires your songs?
Anything and everything, I honestly couldn’t pin point 1 thing in particular. Creativity is random sometimes.
How did you get your start?
I auditioned for numerous talent contests but decided that wasn’t for me so then I made a few cover songs on YouTube and was approached by management.
Who are your musical influences? 
My musical influences are Keri Hilson for her writing, attitude and just general voice and music. Chris Brown for his beautiful voice and creativity, Ryan Leslie for his unique producing and also Mary J Blige, Lauryn Hill and JoJo.
In terms of superstar singers who would you like to be as successful as and why? 
Beyonce, she’s kept a good image with the media, she’s the best performer I’ve seen, I love her energy! You can ask a 6 year old they will know her...you can ask a 50 year old they will know her.
What song do you hear and think ‘OMG I wish I wrote that!’ and why? 
Wow, tricky one! I’d have to say Ushers ‘Without You’ but the way Leah Michelle sings it in Glee, no matter how many times I listen to the song it never fails to give me goose bumps, I just feel like I’m in another world when I listen to it.
Can you remember the 1st song you wrote, how old was you and what was it about? 
Eeeek, yes! Embarrassing. I was about 9 and me and my best friend at the time decided to write, it was called ‘Could you be my boo’ or something hilarious along those lines
What’s next for you? 
Well I’m going to be working with a few artists and producers which I’m really excited about, so watch this space!

FU interviewed new New York based model and aspiring actress Danielle:

How long have you been modelling for?

1 consecutive year

Who/What made you want to model?

I've always wanted to model since a young girl and as I got older Kate Moss was a huge inspiration to me.

 

Have you always been one of those people who just loves to be in front of the camera (or mirror) posing?
YES! Since I could walk. I pose and look in anything I can see my reflection in.

What is it like on set/shoots, there’s a lot of girls, is there really any bitchiness or does everyone just get on and support each other?
I've always had dope collabs. I haven’t run into anyone out of line yet, but then again I may just have that "I won’t stand for it" look.

What do you do when you’re not modelling?
I’m mastering the craft of acting or shopping.

Who is your favourite model?
It’s between Kate Moss and Tyra Banks. I don’t aspire to be anyone but ME! Though I will learn from the path they paved.

 

What your best feature?

-My lips

What type of modelling would you never do?

Nothing is ever out of the question. Sometimes things just need to be tweaked. There’s always a loop hole.

Obviously models have to have a tight body, what do you do to keep in shape?

 I LIVE! I don’t strive to be like what you see on TV and in magazines. I want people to know I’m real, that will make it so much easier for others to relate to me.

Most people think that being a model is an easy job, they don’t realize that it’s a lot of hard work and new models face a lot of criticism and rejection are you ready for that?
Born ready. Over the years my skin has thickened and I'm ready to face the industry head on.

There’s loads of girls who want to be the next top model what makes you so different?

My outlook on life. People like me are rare now. I am charismatic, energetic, reliable, goal-oriented and most importantly OPTIMISTIC. Some people say they want it but are never really willing to risk it all to achieve it. It’s my time now and I will prove that.

Who would you like to work with in the future?
Elle, Seventeen, Vogue and Covergirl, Photographer Nigel Barker and Denzel Washington

What’s next for you?

How long have you been designing?
I’ve been designing all my life.  I’ve been into graphic design and fashion from a young age


How did you get your start?
I was doing a project during the summer holidays from University and after a lot of extra research and designing I managed to start Question.


How would you describe your clothes?

Unique, colourful, inspirational and iconic.

Everyone (and their mum) seems to be designing t-shirts etc at the moment, what makes your designs so unique?
LOL, The reason my designs are you unique is because it not simply a design or graphics. I like to tell a story through my brand. 


Do you think now that a lot of celebrities are bringing out their own lines it makes it a lot more difficult for real designers like yourself to break through?
Yeah there is a lot celebrities bringing out their own lines, but I don’t think it makes it difficult if you step your game up within your market.


What's next for you?
I’m just focusing on getting my new stuff out and also finishing off my next project which should be ready for winter. I have also been blogging a few sneak peeks of the next collection...

When did you start Strictly Babbzy?

I “accidentally” started Strictly Babbzy in October 2009

What exactly is Strictly Babbzy all about?

Well to be honest Strictly Babbzy includes a wide range of things.  First there is the video blog where I address issues and concerns in Barbados but now I have branched off to addressing the rest of the West Indies as well.  There is the website www.strictlybabbzy.com that now has videos and new articles that are West Indian based. 

You seem to have 2 names, Strictly Babbzy and Babbzys cuntery at large, which one is the official name and how did you come up with that name and also where did the name Babbzy come from?

The official name is Strictly Babbzy.  Babbzy’s Cuntery at Large is the Facebook fanpage name.  Actually a friend of mine named Jason Farley came up with the Cuntery at Large part based on one of my rants I did on a blog.  Babbzy has been my nick-name from the time I can remember because my name is Carla Babb. 

What made you wanna start?

I did my first blog as a “dare”.  I saw a Haitian guy talking about his experiences and I thought… “Is there a Bajan doing this”?  I did the first one as a joke, and the next week came and everyone asked me what I would be talking about next. I quickly realized I better find something else to blog about!!

You have a lot of followers, why do you think your blog is so popular?

Because I’m extremely different.  Mind you, there are numerous imitations of me now, but the majority of people know that I am the authentic one.  There was never really a Bajan person acting in this sort of capacity so it struck a chord with Bajans around the world and even non Bajans.  There’s a lot of seriousness to what I say as well as a good amount of humour so it’s a perfect blend.

I’ve seen people complaining about the language you use have you ever felt the need to censor yourself in order to appeal to a different kind of audience?

In the beginning I was worried.  I used to get soooooo many emails of people complaining about the things I say.  But I don’t think I need to censor.  Some of the most successful people in America “cursed” before.  Eddie Murphy, Ice Cube, Monique, Steve Harvey, just to name a few.  So the cursing may be new to people because of the Bajan accent.  But cursing isn’t an issue to most people. 

When I first heard you talk I just assumed that you was a Bajan who had relocated to Canada, but as an actual Canadian do you ever get people questioning your creditability i.e.; how she can be chattin’ bout Bim (or the Caribbean) when she doesn’t live in the Caribbean or how can she possibly really know what’s going on or what we are dealing with?

This is an amazing question.  People say this to me all the time.  But how can someone in Jamaica comment on Nicki Minaj who isn’t in Jamaica?  Or a Trini comment on Lil Wayne.  But they do right?  They don’t live in North America yet West Indians comment on what goes on in North America all the time.  I lived in Barbados long enough as an adult so I feel that I have the right to discuss what I saw as well as my own experiences. 

Your video blogs are very entertaining, but how do you choose which topics to cover or is it just literally whatever is on your mind at that particular time?

It’s usually what ever comes to my mind at the time.  I’ve always had a humorous side to me so it’s fairly easy to find something to talk about. 

You seem to be a bit of a mini celeb, which means you must get invited to loads of stuff, what’s the best event you’ve ever attended?

LOL @ mini celeb.  Far from far from. Yes I get invited to a lot of events.  But one of the BEST events I ever been invited to was Sunny Side Up during the NYC Labour Day Parade weekend.  LOVED IT!!!

You currently are running a wukkup contest, have you been shocked/surprised by any of the entrants...?

I actually thought there would have been more.  A free ticket to crop over or 1000USD.  You see people brekkin' down all the time in parties so I thought there would have been much more contestants to be honest. 

Do you feel that because the name of your blog includes the word CUNTery that a lot of people may see it, take offense and then not even give the blog a chance?

People will take offence.  But they are not my demographic. My motto is, I do well with the audience I target.  There is no way I would win over everyone regardless of what my page is called. 

Can you explain to the Europeans/non Bajans what cuntery actually means?

Cuntery is a word I just came up with in one of my early blogs.  Bajans will say “bare cunt” which means nuff foolishness.  So cuntery was just the act of being foolish.  So I usually blog about people and their foolishness. 

You seem to be quite a busy lady already, but what else do you have planned, what’s next for Babbzy?

Lordy.  Planned next… you will just have to wait and see yes!!!

How long have you been rapping for?
I have been rapping since I was about 15. So about 17 yrs

How did you get your start?
As a battle emcee  in the late 90's

Where did your name come from?
My name is a combination of my real name "CYRUS " and my Alta ego  " Da virus"

How would you describe your sound?
My sound consists of an Old Skool vibe combined with cockney rhyming  slang and  positive lyrical content.

Who are your musical influences?
Bob Marley, Biggie, Redman, Wu Tang, Ty and Black Twang to name a few

You have a mixtape 'The Spliff tapes' now,everyone and their mum seems to be releasing mixtapes at the moment, what makes yours so different?
One of things that sets it  apart from the rest  is that it's a collaboration mixtape. Me and French rapping sensation "Ichelmee" run riot over classic hiphop beats. The plan was to pool our resources and create global recognition. Exposing me to Ichelmee's French fans and vice versa

Why are mixtapes so important to you as an artist?
To me I feel a Mixtape is important as it is fairly inexpensive to produce also as it is a free download and you do not intend to sell any of the songs you can use whatever beats u like.
The main thing is the FREE part though. It's also a chance to give something back to the loyal fans and at the same time entice new ones.

What inspires your music?
My music is inspired  by everyday life and personal experiences. I just throw in a little light hearted hummer, lick and stick

Do you think the area you live in influences your lyrics and if so do you not worry that ‘outsiders’ may not get what you’re talking about?
No not at all, I keep it bilingual,  why limit yourself ?

What’s the biggest/best show you’ve done?
I think that would have to be 2010 MMF (Miami music festival), I stayed at the Hilton and performed all weekend it was a very good experience. 

As a new artist, if you could support any rapper on tour who would it be?
I'd like to support Pharoahe Monch we could perform the "My Life" track together, that would definitely bring the house down. 

What’s next for you?
I am currently working on my new album "Da Saga Continues" which will be available later this year. So.......Watch this space!!!!

FU interviewed Bajan singer, songwriter, director and actor Levi King:

Your profile says that you’re a singer, songwriter, theatre director and music producer in training, but which one came first and how did you get into the others?

I first started out acting in Theatre and through this I developed an interest in directing. I always loved music and eventually teamed up with some colleagues at my secondary school and formed a singing group called AzMan. Then the singing led to an interest in the production side of music.

What genre of music do AzMan sing?

It’s called Fling. It’s FLowing and sINGing in a Barbadian accent and using Barbadian dialect and vernacular over danceable beats. Occasionally we sing fusions of Fling and Soca, Fling and Ragga- Soca, Fling and Reggae.

What inspires your songs?
I’m inspired by personal experience, or sometimes the beat of a song may bring a topic out of me.

As a theatre director and someone who is interested in the theatre, what is your favourite theatre production and why?

"73" by a young Jamaican theatre company called Quilt, "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Odale's Choice" are in them for sure. I like theatre that is different and inventive. In my mind these pieces are on that level.

Who would you love to produce/write a song for and what kind of song would it be?

Man, if I could produce or write a song for anyone, boy I don't know.. There’s a lot of artistes I would love to work with; Damian Marley is one for sure, K'Naan, Chris Brown, Adele the list is long. I like to write on a range of topics but usually I prefer to deal with songs that inspire self reflection. But I can get pretty hype too lol.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently in the process of working with a few partners and creating a theatre company, then a film company. I will also be releasing  a few singles with  AzMan as well as another riddim with my production team.

How long have you been rapping for?
Just under a year, but I started recording at the start of the year.

Where did your name come from?
It’s quite funny actually. Out of all my friends, I was one of smallest and looked like one of the youngest so they used to call me ‘Growns’ which was a shortened version of ‘Growing’.

How would you describe your sound?
There’s a lot of Wordplay, it’s new, Energetic, Real, and Versatile.

Who are your musical influences?
Wretch 32, Tinchy Stryder, Scorcher, Fabolous & Drake.

You’re currently working on your debut mixtape, why do you feel it’s so important for artists to release mixtapes?
I believe for underground rappers like myself, the best way to reach out to your fans or any audience is through a mixtape; it can also get an artist to the next level and closer to becoming mainstream. An artist can show his journey and tell his story through a beat that just so happens to be another artist’s beat. It can also help you to get more attention especially if you are using a well known, recognizable beat.

What inspires your music?
Family, Friends and real life experiences.

R-Kelly and Jay Z teamed up to do ‘Best of both worlds’ if you could do the same thing & collaborate with an RnB artist on an album who would you choose?
Angel, He’s hard. He’s like a hood singer, yet he still has his head screwed on and he is blessed with a great voice. Someone like that would be a great feature in terms of RnB.

Do you think the area you live in influences your lyrics and if so do you not worry that ‘outsiders’ may not get what you’re talking about?
I will never forget where I come from and I will always stand up and represent for my own, but, I don’t write music for my area, I write it for myself and for others who can relate to it. I want to express my feelings and experiences through music and hopefully everyone including “outsiders” can enjoy that with me.

What’s the biggest/best show you’ve done?
As I’ve just started my career as an artist I’ve just been doing University shows. But bigger shows will come in the near future. As I grow so will the shows

As a new artist, if you could support any rapper on tour who would it be?
My favourite UK rapper, Wretch 32.

What’s next for you?
Just getting my music out there, increasing my fan base via videos, audios and shows etc. You never
know what the future holds, but it definitely looks bright as it’s been a great start.

FU interviewed London rapper Maniry:
How long have you been rapping for?
Since I was a sperm cell

Where did your name come from?
On Pro evolution soccer 4, you can make your own player, but the commentator is only programmed to say pre-recorded names of actual football players, so the closest name to Mennar (my real name) was Maniry, then the name stuck!

How would you describe your sound?
Real Hip- Hop with that U.K. touch. But by that I don't mean double G belts and bootleg trueys, spittin' 16's on the 65 to Ealing Broadway. I mean that Big L flow with that suave LDN demeanor lol!

Who are your musical influences?
Obviously I grew up on artists like Big L, Cormega, Canibus, Wu Tang, Pharoah Monche, Noreaga, Mobb deep and all that gangsta ish. But recently I've been listening to alot of lighter Hip-Hop like Jay Dee, 9th wonder, MF Doom, Slum V, Khrysis, Mad villain and all of those guys. But I don't only listen to Rap and Hip- Hop I kind of grab influence from everywhere. When I was around 18 I went through a massive Indie phase where I didn't listen to any Hip-Hop and just educated myself on Alternative new music. I found myself in record shops in Camden copping 90's rock vinyls and I didn't even have anything to play them on. But its cool because that was when I started taking music seriously and decided to take Rap from a different angle and not follow the rest of the U.K's depiction of it.

You’re releasing an EP soon, what can we expect from it and why should we download it?
I'm on it, talking poo and having fun doing so. I believe that music passes energy, I keep mine positive so it'll have you feeling that way too. Plus its fully produced by VersaBeatz who is an amazing producer, he has worked with many major artists from both the U.K and the States producing bangers left, right and centre, download his free instrumentals mixtape "Imogen" now! There is also a feature from Krept and my darg Boss Blacks also.

What inspires your music?
Everyday stuff... well what I see as 'everyday stuff' as a 20 year old living in London who misses the younger, reckless days because he's seeing little glimpses of that 9-5 adult life that he doesn't want to be dragged into. So instead he keeps on the bright side where the weed is green and the alcohol is brown and sweet :D

I don't want to sound like another Odd Future groupie but Frank Ocean.

Do you think the area you live in influences your lyrics and if so do you not worry that ‘outsiders’ may not get what you’re talking about?
The area I live in influences my music so much because environment plays a major factor when it comes to song writing. But I don't worry at all because Hip-Hop is all about understanding new cultures and new areas. So I think "outsiders" will be intrigued to hear about how we're living over here.
 
What’s the biggest/best show you’ve done?
So far I've only performed at 3 shows in 3 different venues, But I'm really looking forward to my next one on the 11th of May at "Push the Tide" in Brighton which is part of the massive Great Escape festival, so that should be mad crazy. I'm looking to go nuts on stage so try get down for that one.

If you could bring back 1 era of Hip-Hop which one would you choose and why?
The times where Cormega brought out the album 'True Meaning' around 2002 and had that beef with Nas also when Jay Z dropped the 'Blueprint' and Dre made '2001' then Eminem gave us 'The Eminem Show', that Era of Hip-Hop was lyrical. There was a lot more meaning behind what people said back then and that for me is when Hip-Hop was at its peak.

What’s next for you?
Very soon I'm going to release a song called "Virus" featuring Krept from the U.K. rap duo Krept & Konan. This song is on my E.P. Then once that is out I shall release the E.P. so make sure you stay locked because during that time, I'll be doing performances, freestyles and dropping more and more videos and songs. Anth Latue

FU interviewed rapper and producer Anth Latue
How long have you been rapping and producing for?
I first started writing lyrics when I was about 14 years old. Soon after I started downloading instrumentals and recording songs to mini-disc and tape for school/college friends. The production work came quite a lot later in my life.

How did you get your start?
I have always been a massive fan of Hip-Hop and RnB for as long as I can remember. I just thought, you know what, I love this music, I want to give it a go. I started out learning other peoples songs, then writing my own lyrics. Years later I started putting together complete original songs. The first time that I knew that it would be a good idea to continue writing music came when I was asked to record for a major label in London when I was 17 years old. I went independent not long after, and I put together my debut album ‘Unfinished & Perfected LP’ which is actually still available through iTunes. (Sorry for the plug!)

Who are your musical influences?
I have a massive list of influences from all over the place really. From Motown to Hip-Hop, so poeple like Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, Tupac, Biggy, Jay-z, Mobb Deep, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Common and Nas. Production wise, I am a massive fan of J Dilla, Kanye, Just Blaze and Premier.

What inspires your music?
Everything I do, see, touch, hear, love and hate.

R-Kelly and Jay Z teamed up to do ‘Best of both worlds’ if you could do the same thing & collaborate with an RnB artist on an album who would you choose?
Ohhhhh I’d love to either do an album with Al Green or John Legend. I can’t even explain what I would do to get in a studio with one of those guys for half an hour. I like my RnB singers to be a bit more old school Soul....once again my early Motown influences are probably the reason for this haha.

Do you think the area you live in influences your lyrics and if so, do you not worry that ‘outsiders’ may not get what you’re talking about?
Really good question... Now I have actually had this problem before. My early music was very local, speaking about characters that everyone knew. I needed to stop doing this in order to branch out with my music. Of course what seemed to happen was, as soon as my music changed, people felt that I had changed. I was still the same artist, I just knew that if I was going to get people from London, or anywhere else in the world to listen, I needed to be a bit more accessible. It was a sacrifice that I had to make. To be honest, the true fans of my music have followed my musical style all over the place, and they’ve always been amazingly helpful in spreading the word.

As a new artist, if you could support any rapper on tour who would it be?
It would have to be the big guys; Jay-Z & Kanye... Sorry if you’ve heard it a million times, but the energy would be incredible. They're touring so I am going to watch them perform in June. I’m going to be dying to try and hijack the stage! Could possibly end badly for me though... haha.

What’s next for you?
I have a new album that I'm working on at the moment. I'm trying to keep details scarce at the moment, I don’t want to ruin the suprise. But new singles and a new album will be coming in 2012. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Fantom Dundeal

Starting his career as a rapper, Fantom has come a long way since FU 1^st interviewed him in 2007. Fast forward 5 years and bajan artist Fantom is still going strong, no longer a rapper he has now fully embraced the world of Reggae and is now a confident Reggae artist.

Fantom, Long time, what have you beenup to since your last interview?
Well, it's been a few years. But I built up the courage to do what I wanted to from the start and that was to do Reggae/Dancehall, and I've been grinding and pushing out constant music and videos.
Why did you decide to switch from HipHop to Reggae?
 It was something I'd always wanted to do, plus I had beef with one of the main members in the recording group I was in. So when I left from around them I decided I would make a fresh and do what I wanted and not what people wanted me to do.
Would you ever consider going back to Hip Hop?
Well.. If the money is right I can still rap!!!!!!!!
How would you describe your newsound, what kinda stuff do you tend to sing about?

Honestly, I still get inspiration from Beres, Aidonia, Konshens, Mavado, Buggy Nhakente, LRG and many more bajan artists

I have 2 and my 3rd ones dropping in March 2012 (Buss Down)
You’ve obviously performed at a lot of shows since the last interview, what’s the biggest or best or most fun one so far?
The Biggest would have to be between Reggae on The Beach or Hill (2011)
Best show was a show I did was with Konshens, Lil Rick, Darrio & G81/Renaissance Family at UWI (University of West Indies)
Most fun was performing with POWERx4 On the road for Kadooment with my Monstapiece family
What’s next for you?
More songs, more CDs and more music videos (MustBuss & KeepBussin) Look out for "Feeling You" and  "Meditation"(remix) music videos droppin simultaneously as well as 2 new tunes "Ganja Music" and "Rock Away"

We’ve seen a lot of people about who have the most amazing sense of style, they dress so unique and are really setting trends and don’t care to follow fashion.  How would you describe your style? 
I have a variety of styles, from the Gianni Versace look to the skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors look,  I try to stand out with my style.
Where do you shop?
I shop almost anywhere from thrift stores to Urban Outfitters.
What's it like in your hometown, does everyone dress like this?
I live in a urban enviroment, so a lot of people are not on the retro, trim fitted, outta the box style.
How do people react to the way you dress?
When some people see my attire the first thing they say is, "WTF do you have on?'
What influences your style?
My style is influenced and inspired by my surroundings.
What are 3 items you can't live without?
My Bass loafers, Ray-Ban sunglasses and my bracelets. I can't live without these items, because accessories bring an outfit together!
What's your summer style prediction?
Dress less, but STILL look your best.

FU interviewed 18 year old writer Bronchey Battle:

How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since the age of thirteen.
What made you interested in writing?
I used to be in anger management, and writing was how I expressed my emotions. After writing for so long, it became a hobby of mine.
Do you have any books published?
Yes. My first book “Billionaire Boyz” has been published, and is out now.

Where did the idea from the book come from? Is it based on a true story or real people?

None of my books are based on actual people.

What kind of stuff do you tend to write about?
Every day life. Life experiences, family, street life, sex…etc.
What inspires your writing?
Being creative and creating a fantasy world where whatever I want to happen happens, is what
inspires my writing. Also bringing an awareness to certain situations inspires me.
Is there any kinda ritual you must follow to get you in the writing mood?
I have to truly be inspired to start writing. If I’m not in the mood to express my creative
nature, I will not be able to write. Music helps as well.
As a writer do you have plans to branch out into any other styles of writing eg, song writing, scriptwriting?
I plan on branching out into more mainstream types of writing as soon as I graduate high school. Movies are also something I plan on doing.

FU interviewed London Singer Jessica Symonds:

How long have you been singing for?
Since I was about 12 years old
What made you decide, right, I want to be a singer?
When I was 14 I got involved in a project called ADP (Artist development programme) at the Hackney Empire Theatre. I met so many other young talented artists, together we devised a show to be performed at the theatre and I was so inspired by the whole project, I knew this was what I wanted to do.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say the dominant styles are Rock/Soul/Pop
Who are your musical influences?
Wow, I have so many; Nirvana, Billy Holiday, Etta James, Coldplay, Eryka Badu, Michael Jackson, Jessie J, Noisettes, Rihanna, Tina Turner and so many more. But I think the artists who have personally really inspired me are Beyonce for her Powerful stage presence, Amy Winehouse for the raw truthfulness in her voice and lyrics and my mum!
In terms of superstar singers who would you like to be as successful as & why?
I think there are so many amazing female artists out there at the moment kicking arse, and to be honest I just want to join them in some arse kicking!
With people being hailed as YouTube stars and the rise of independent artists do you still feel it’s important for you as an artist to be signed to a major or do you feel you can be equally as successful as an independent/underground artist?
I think no one can deny that artists have a hell of a lot more power now than they used to and you can really build a strong following and buzz around yourself and music independently. But I think a major does need to come in at some point, to take it a step further to reach the masses, if that’s what your aim is...
Do you have any EP’s or mixtapes out?
My debut EP’s being released this summer, so I’m super frickin’ excited to share it with everyone. I just really hope people connect and enjoy the music!!
You’re releasing your video for ‘Rockstar’ soon why do you feel it is important for artists to release music videos?
I think now that the internet and websites such as YouTube have become such powerful tools for marketing and promoting yourself, it is extremely important to have strong visuals to go with your music in order to connect with your fans and draw more people in.
As a new artist looking for some recognition would you ever consider auditioning for a reality show like Xfactor?
Xfactor does great things for some artists but it’s just not for me!
What’s next for you?
I’ve just released the video for one of my tracks off the EP ‘RockStar’ and I’ve got two more videos lined up. I’m releasing my EP in the Summer, and I’m planning to have a second part to the EP released at the end of the year, then hopefully an album next year and as all ways I’ll be gigging, writing, recording and singing me lil heart out to whoever will listen!

FU interviewed rapper Freeze:

How long have you been rapping for?
Nearly 4 years now.
Where did your name come from?
I used to do grime and had the name Freezer because my delivery was ice cold, but people called me freeze for short, so when I started rapping I just decided to run with the name Freeze.
Who are your musical influences?
Me, myself and I
You’re releasing your mixtape; The Deep Freeze soon; everyone and their mum seem to be releasing mixtapes at the moment, what makes yours so different?
Not to sound too big headed, it's a work of art, a master piece, a classic if you will lol. Nah
seriously I've got tracks with proper concepts, I’ve got some very talented singers on the hooks, the production is upbeat, the recording quality is on point, and most importantly there isn’t another Freeze. So no one’s making music like me, my material is heartfelt.
Why are mixtapes so important to you as an artist, why did you feel the need to release one, why not just release an album or EP?
That's a good question. I feel a mixtape should take your fans on a journey, the same journey you’re on so that they get to know you and where you’re coming from and that's exactly what I've done with The Deep Freeze.
What inspires your music?
Everyday life, my surroundings and the world we live in.
There’s an increase in rappers now trying to sing on their tracks (although they’re clearly shit singers) would you ever make that crossover and try to sing your own hooks?
Lol I've got two tracks on my mixtape with a little singing vibe, I think you can try a ‘ting as long as it’s not over the top and not on every song you drop.
What’s your opinion on choreographed rappers, there seems to be an increasing amount of so called rappers doing real dance routines in their videos, if you got signed to a major and they wanted you to do this do you think you could happily dance around like you’re in a boyband?
Never in a million years! Artists that do that are called puppets.
R-Kelly and Jay Z teamed up to do ‘Best of both worlds’ if you could do the same thing & collaborate with an RnB artist on an album who would you choose?
I'm actually doing something similar at the moment with a UK reggae artist called Rastickz (@Rastickz) the movements called "2 Worldz Collide"
Do you think the area you live in influences your lyrics and if so do you not worry that ‘outsiders’may not get what you’re talking about?
I would say yes because I rap about what I see and hear in my area. But every area has problems and ups and downs; I think it's more down to how you break it down for everyone to understand you.
As a new artist, if you could support any rapper on tour who would it be?
I would have to say Nas as I've always listened to his music and he's a deep thinker just like me.
What’s next for you?
World domination, my second mixtape "Tales of theAbominable Snowman” and the branding of me, The Abominable Snow Man

Ms. LiLi

From singing in her mums heels in front of her imaginary audience to performing at Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre Ms. LiLi has already come a long way. Describing her sound as mainly RnB Ms. LiLi still loves to experiment and do things out of her comfort zone. Also a talented songwriter Ms. LiLi can do it all and there is even plans to play instruments and produce in the future so that she can have those all important 'slashes' after her name Ms LiLi singer/songwriter/producer.

How did you get your start?
I started singing in my school choir at 14. Then at 16 I was heard singing outside the house of a friend whose mom is the CEO of a charity called E.Y.E.S, she heard me, ran outside and asked me to start attending the music workshops. Once I did that I started doing loads of performances and from there the passion just grew.
Who are your musical influences?

Without a shadow of a doubt Beyonce! Anyone who knows me would be able to tell you that. Her work ethic is amazing. I don’t think there is any female artist who has worked as hard or achieved as much as she has at the age she is.
What inspires your songs?
Majority of the time it’s my life; what I’m going through, what I’ve been through and my thoughts.
Can you remember the 1st song you wrote?
Hahaha! OMG, Wow... this is soo embarrassing... I was about 11... It was called ‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ it was super cheesy! But it was about males lying in relationships and for that reason they couldn’t tell me what to do. Although at the age of 11 I really don’t think I knew anything substantial about relationships!
How hard is it to write a song, how long is the process and how do you come up with the melody?

It depends on what the song is about, and what it’s for, but songs have taken me from 5 minutes to months to complete. Melodies normally come to my head as the words do, so I just go with the flow and see where it takes me.
What song do you hear and think ‘OMG I wish I wrote that!’ and why?

Big White Room by Jessie J, everything about that song is amazing!
With people being hailed as YouTube stars and the rise of independent artists do you still feel it’s important for you as an artist to be signed to a major or do you feel you can be equally as successful as an independent/underground artist?

Being signed to a major record label obviously helps give you the massive push you need in the right direction but those who are unsigned can make it to. With great work ethic anything is achievable

Do you have management, How important do you think it is for a new artist to have a manager do you think it gives you an advantage or do you feel you can do it all by yourself?

No not at the moment at the stage I’m at a manager isn’t necessary it would be nice to have a manager but I’m still getting my name out there, so I think I need to build a bigger fan base and get a feel for my ‘signature sound’ before big plans get the better of me
As a singer why do you feel it’s important to write your own songs?

Definitely because no one will relate to it more than you, it’s your thoughts, your words, your emotions; it’s your life and 100% true to you.
Who have you worked with so far?

So far an artist called K.J. I also have a song coming out soon with Dapz On The Map and there’s a song in the making with and MC called V!TAL
What’s next for you?

Videos, hopefully my own website to showcase my videos, my 1st E.P, performances and a whole lot of work, as that’s the only way to make it to the top!
